1Huge Hidden Costs, Major Design FlawsDec 24, 2008
By *** "a reader"
Not as advertised, barely usable, fragile, poorly designed, a living nightmare.
As mentioned by another reviewer many of the connector plugs needed to make this product function are missing on purpose. Half of the tips are not included. Specifically 2, 29, 30, 74,75, 76 83,84, 85, 88, 125
If you search around the internet and make some calls you can find out that extra tips can be ordered at 800-223-5546 x2064 at a cost of $6.95 each. Even if you get one free that means you must shell out $69.50 more to get a full set. If you do order them, ask if they are in stock and don't be surprised if they are actually not available! If you are a tech who wanted a flexible, affordable way to have a universal way to be able to keep from buying and carrying around a bunch of power adaptors for various products, this is a bad choice for this as well as the other reasons listed below.
The 69 watt maximum wattage available on this unit will allow you to charge high wattage batteries, but will not allow you to actually run a high wattage laptop by plugging it into the wall. A message will appear warning you that the power adapter will not work. Dell alone has dozens of models that require more than 69 watts.
The connector between the interchangeable tips and the power brick is poorly designed in two ways.
First, it is possible to connect the tip backwards by mistake. There are no markings, hints, keying or other mechanism to let you know. Once you figure out which way is which, I advise you to mark a circle on the side of the connector that will match to the red circle on the tips with a permanent marker.
Second, the connector that plugs into the tips is EXTREMELY poorly made. It is flimsy and fragile beyond belief. Eight thin metal pieces dangle out the end of the connector. They are very soft, easily bent and it is very easy for them to touch each other and be so out of alignment that no connection is made when they mate with a tip. You see each tip has a large cavity with pins and there is so much slop that when you put the tip on, all eight of the dangling pieces can be pushed aside allowing four pins to short against four other pins and only four of the intended pins will make any connection to the tip. Even if the tip is correctly positioned and making contact, it as a very wobbly affair, and the slightest josseling can cause intermittent connections, very bad news. Stay away.
It is absolutely amazing that such a poorly engineered product ever made it out the door. Needs a recall.
It is equally amazing that the company issued this product three times under three different names.

2Tips are poorly madeJan 21, 2009

The adapter is nice looking and work great most of the time. The TIPS however are poorly made of cheap material. They are constantly breaking on me. The customer service is always back ordered on these tips. Perhaps if they had tips that were more usable and less prone to breaking it would be a good idea. I paid $80 for this adapter and still with no power for my computer.

3Useful idea nicely madeJun 24, 2008

This curious gadget is a usable upscale version of the Targus Universal Laptop Power Supply. It has a unique marketing strategy. It comes with tips 1,3,4,5,6,7,8,11,36,87,129 and a little booklet which matches tips with makes and models of supported products. The booklet (printed in 2007) mentions quite a number of other tip numbers. If you like Belkin will send you one more tip for free. It is rated to have an output of up to 69 Watts. It took me only a matter of seconds to find that I needed tips 2 and 88. The phone number in the booklet said to call a number in area code 310. It did not answer and there was no address to go with the number. Clever marketing.

5Works on all of my notebook and netbooksFeb 26, 2009

This one is similar to the Belkin F5L010, only that it supplies 110 watts instead of 69 watts. I bought the lower power model because that is all I need, and the price is much lower. You can read my review on the F5L010 below. These two models are essentially the same, except for the power rating.

I was a little hesitant when ordering this because of the low review rating, as well as low number of reviews, but for only $29, I just couldn't pass this up. I tried this "universal" power adapter on my IBM ThinkPad T43, Compaq Presario X1000, Asus EEEPC, and Asus N20. It worked on every one of them. There is also a car adapter that allows you to charge/use computers inside a car. A total of 11 "power tips" are provided. If you have Acer, IBM/Lenovo, HP, NEC, Toshiba, Sony, Compaq, Dell, Asus notebook/netbook computers, you won't have to buy any more power tips. Even if your computer is not one of the above, it is likely that it uses one of the 11 tips. A booklet is provided in the package which lists power tip compatibility. Belkin also has a computer compatibility page on its web site, so you can check before buying. If you are just missing one, you can get it for free from Belkin's web site.

In regard to the power tips, they are nicely constructed from quality materials, not prone to break or be inserted incorrectly. They sort of look like the Ethernet RJ-45 jack, so that there is only one way to insert them. Unlike some power adapters, this one doesn't get very warm when charging.

Belkin Customer service claims that they DO NOT MAKE a power adapter of this sort that has a capacity of 110 watts, only units with a capacity of 69 watts, so check for yourself- 800-223-5546 x2064
