4Easy on, easy off, good protectionMar 19, 2009
By M. J. Mccaffrey "Matt OneLANE"
There was much hand-wringing about product shortages during August 2008, the month after iPhone 3G first went on sale. Particularly, certain case colors were available only with certain memory configurations. "I wanted black, and all they had was white!" was a common cry.

I bought the white, figuring my phone would be in a protective case almost from the moment it was unpacked. After a few days in a Griffin Wave Combo for iPhone 3G (Black and Green) case, which was unbelievably counterintuitive to assemble and use (!), I found the DLO "Jam Jacket" at Best Buy.

This is a simple, slip-on case made of silicone rubber. All ports and the camera lens remain accessible when the case is in use. The iPhone screen is protected with an included "Surface Shield." Since the iPhone touch interface is optical, not capacitive, the shield seems to have no effect on controlling the interface. As another reviewer mentioned, the shield is tricky to install. Clean the phone thoroughly first, and use a microfiber cloth to catch any stray dust or smudges. I applied mine on a humid day, and even the atmospheric humidity seemed to create an interference pattern under the shield.

The Jam Jacket itself provides adequate protection for iPhone. The four corners are built up to provide extra cushioning at these vulnerable points. The mute switch is well-protected from accidental flicks. Unfortunately, it is also well-protected from intentional ones. I'm now in the habit of peeling back the upper-left corner of the jacket to ensure I'm doing what I intended to do with the mute. I carry my iPhone most often in a slacks pocket, and it also spends significant time in the coffee-cup holder of my car during my long commute. The Jam Jacket is great for the way I use it.

The other two switches on iPhone--stand-by and Home--are covered completely. DLO has made them easy to find and use; projections underneath the pads are well-placed to push the buttons themselves when pressed from outside.

It is a good idea to remove the jacket occasionally for cleaning. Ordinary hand soap or dish detergent with warm water, a thorough drying with a lint-free towel, and the original deep-black appearance is restored.

Overall, the Jam Jacket transforms the look of the iPhone, subtly. The sexy curves and sleek look become a slightly bulky, squared off slab. If you use your iPhone in places where it could represent a theft magnet, this would be a good thing. And, if you got white instead of black, or vice versa, iPhone's case color is rendered irrelevant.

This case also comes in blue Digital Lifestyles Outfitters DLA40115/17 Jam Jacket for iPhone 3G with 3 Surface Shields (Cobalt Blue), pink Digital Lifestyles Outfitters DLA40116/17 Jam Jacket for iPhone 3G with 3 Surface Shields (Pink), or clear Digital Lifestyles Outfitters DLA40100/17 Jam Jacket for iPhone 3G with 3 Surface Shields (Clear). That makes two more colors than Apple offers (presuming black is already on the menu, and clear doesn't count!), and you'll have good protection for your iPhone.

5No Instructions for Surface Shield!!! Love it anyway!Jun 23, 2010
By R. Langlois
I bought the Jam Jacket at best buy and it came with 3 surface shields. There were no instructions, which honestly I was really surprised about, I mean seriously they couldn't offer just a few words of advice! The screen protectors had a #1 tab and a #2 tab. It's late so I peeled off the side marked #2 notice that it's sticky and apply it to the iphone. Instant bubbles, my review at this point would have been very low. It doesn't make sense, so I read through reviews. Finally, I realize that the protector isn't really that sticky and is in between the two tabs, there are 3 films: #1, #2 and the actual protector is between them. So if you are complaining about the stickiness, then you probably did what I did at first and applied the wrong one to your iphone. Luckily I didn't waste one of the surface shields, since Tab #1 was still on the protector, and even though I had severely smudged the outer protector surface, I figure it's the outer surface it will get smudged anyway. So I peeled off the side with Tab #1 and put the protector down on the iphone. Instantly perfect, no bubbles, I can't believe it. The smudgy outer side wiped cleanly off. Hope this helps anyone looking for advice on how to put this flipping thing on without instructions...

4Good protection for an iPhoneNov 03, 2009
By Adam
After my first iPhone broke after being protected by one of the better looking "sleek" iPhonhe cases, I decided to ditch the form over function products and get an iPhone case that actually provides some protection. I'm pretty happy with the DLO Jam Jacket.

The DLO offers a pretty good level of protection when coupled with a clear screen film (included, or can be purchased separately ... I've found these need to be replaced every few months). I think the rubber type provide superior protection to the "hard" cases, despite the Mac Genius at the Apple store who claimed otherwise (think about it, when you drop it rubber is going to absorb shock better than hard plastic).

This is slightly bulkier than my old case, but not nearly as bulky as some of the offerings out there. Overall it's a pretty good bulk to protection tradeoff, in my opinion.

Probably the most controversial aspect of the DLO is it's "tacky" material. This can be either good or bad, depending on how you carry it. I often have my iPhone in my shirt pocket - and for this application, tacky is good as it keeps it from falling out. However, the tacky nature of it can be a big pain when the phone is riding in a jeans pocket, for example (it's hard to get out of the pocket). It also attracts dust.

Note, with any iPhone cover I've found you have to periodically take it off and wipe off the dust that gets inside it.

Overall, this is a good choice that provides good protection from drops without too much of a tradeoff for bulk. If a tacky finish bothers you, this might not be the best choice for you.

5Great buy.Apr 05, 2009

If you are deciding which protective case to get this one is very good. It has a soft rubber feel and is easy to put on and take off of the iPhone. It does it's job very well and looks good while doing it. If you have long straight hair you might want to keep reading. The little bump things on the side grips will grab your hair. My wife complains of it a little bit. It isn't a huge problem but definitely worth mentioning. The corners are a little thicker which is good in the event it gets dropped. If you like to slip your iPhone in your pocket this one will make that more difficult. The softer rubber feel makes it hard to slide in and out of your pocket. One the good side the soft rubber feel makes it stick to your console or dash in the car also. I like that since I usually set it on my seat or middle console. When I have to hit the breaks it stays in place.

5must have protectionAug 19, 2009

The DLO Jam Jacket is awesome. The jacket is very easy to slip around your iPhone. The jacket also provides great traction on surfaces. I no longer have to worry about my iPhone sliding around in my purse or car. I like that the jacket has added protection around the corners and also protects the main function button. This was the main reason why I decided to buy this product over the leading product that Best Buy was promoting.

I do have to admit that I did have trouble getting the protective sheet to make a perfect seal. I guess that's why they give you 3 sheets for 3 tries. I wasted a sheet because dust and lint got in the way of the seal. That was my fault since I used my bed as a work table and the ceiling fan was on. I would recommend applying the protective sheet at a table that's free of lint, dirt, and dust. Make sure no fans are on too!

As soon as I got the protective sheet on with no air bubbles and I slipped the jacket over the iPhone I thought that this was money well spent. I'm very satisfied with this purchase, and would recommend this product to anyone.
