By M. Kemper My HTPC (Home Theater PC) is hooked up to an HDMI switch which then goes to my flat screen (which, alas, has only one HDMI input, hence the need for the switch). When switching from the HTPC to (say) Tivo, the HTPC (NVIDIA video card and Vista 64 though the same problem with XP 32) would lose the signal of the switch and sense it no longer had an attached monitor. This caused havoc that usually could be repaired by switching back but frequently I had to either log back off/on or reboot to resolve. A constant daily headache. This device when attached between the NVIDIA video card and the HDMI switch fixed this entirely.
Easy to use. Attach the Gefen to the HDMI switch cable, plug the Gefen into an outlet, push a button and it records the "I am here and alive" signal from the monitor. You then unplug the Gefen from the outlet and attach it between the video card and HDMI switch, and no more problems. You have fooled the HTPC that there is always a "here and alive" monitor.
Wish it was not so stinkin' expensive but it has made life easier on an every day basis so it was worth it for me.
Excellent and convenient solution for HTPCAug 02, 2010
By Silicon Valley Guy I had installed a Mac Mini as my home theater PC and was becoming frustrated at the power sequencing requirements - turn on the TV and receiver (which is in the path to the TV) before the Mac booted. If the Mac powered up before the video path was established to the TV, then it would come up with the entirely wrong resolution and then I'd basically have to reboot. And if this was bad for me, imagine how it was for everybody else in the family!
The DVI Detective took away this dependency. Setup is a little tricky as you have to shift DVI cables around in the process - but this shouldn't be a problem for somebody sophisticated enough to set up a home theater PC in the first place.
I really like that you don't have to keep this little box powered after setup - one less wall wart and one less power cable to manage.
Once set up, I haven't had to worry about this even once in the year+ since I installed it.

By M. Lynch This item works exactly like they say it does. I use my DVI monitor on a KVM switch and after changing one of the computers to an ATI video card, it would reset everytime I swapped back to the system. This card allows the system to remember the monitor without causing a reset everytime I swap back. I received it promptly through the seller and am very satisfied.
