5Works like a charmMay 12, 2008
By S. Carpenter
I have a 5 year old Toshiba DLP, and when I updated to a new AV reciever a few months ago, I ran into a sticky situation. My DLP TV only has a DVI port on the back, and even though it's supposed to be HDCP (HDMI's copy protection) compliant, I couldn't get it to work with my reciever.

I tried several different HDMI-to-DVI cables, but none would work with this combo. I also tried the same cables with a $99 HDMI DVD player, and they worked fine, so it had to be a compatability issue between the reciever and the TV.

I had just about resigned myself to either using companant cables (which prevented upscaling of DVDs) or to buying a new TV (which I wasn't quite ready to do yet) when I found a review on this box. It looked like it might do the trick, so I ordered one, and tried it out.

After connecting my recievers HDMI out to the input on this box, and using a standard DVI cable from it to the TV, sweet success! Everything now runs beutifully over HDMI, and I've eliminated 4 sets of bulky componant cables from my system. It works fine with my PS3 and will allow DVDs to be upscaled to 1080i (the max my TV will handle).

Since I don't use the TV speakers I didn't hook up the optical output, so I can't speak to that aspect of the box, but the HDMI to DVI functionality works like a charm. The unit is a little pricey, compared with a HDMI-DVI cable, but not compared to a whole new TV, so I figure I'm ahead of the game if it works for the next year or so.

4HDCP IssueNov 18, 2011

Appears to be a very good product but didn't work for my application so I had to return it. I have an older DVI projector and mistakenly thought that it would resolve my issue with input of an HDCP compliant signal. It didn't. Mfg technical rep was very helpful in the diagnosis. Seller was very good about the return of the item.
