Too heavy for its own good!Nov 04, 2009
By Benny Bobo I swear by Acoustic Research products. If you comparison shop Acoustic Research and Monster products, for example, you can usually find a better quality Acoustic Research product for a cheaper price. This HDMI is no exception as far as the technology/performance/price comparison goes, but I cannot recommend this product. To illustrate why, I will describe what my first year of using this product has been like and contrast it with the past week.
The First Year: 1) This cable is surprisingly thick; it's about the diameter of a nickel. My satellite TV installer said he'd never seen an HDMI like it! 2) The HDMI has a sturdy coating that ensures high performance. 3) There are also great, gold-plated pick-ups that result in little signal loss.
The Past Week: As a result, this WAS an absolutely incredible product. I compared the picture/sound will cheaper HDMIs and there is a notable difference in performance between this Master Series cable and others. However, a major design flaw recently revealed itself: the thickness of the cable and weight of the insulation are so extreme that they constantly pull down on the gold pick-ups. All that leverage is placed on the connection. This is bad. The result was that, over time, the picture quality deteriorated (initially there was noticeable green static) until the picture disappeared altogether. I used to be able to wiggle the cable and then picture would return to normal. But the other day I discoverd that the weight of the cable had actually pulled the HDMI out of my TV...LEAVING THE GOLD PICK-UP IN THE TV. That's right...the cable was so heavy that the leverage placed on the pick-up resulted in the cable actually breaking itself.
Verdict: For both the price and the opinion that I don't think you should ever have to buy more than one HDMI, I cannot recommend this product. Acoustic Research indisputably created a supreme HDMI, but the qualities that make it so good are the qualities that ultimately made it break.
