Solid, good looking rack, with lots of optionsMar 04, 2010

So, I like to rackmount equipment. I have a server closet that I screwed some rack rails onto and that works, in a closet for my computers and switches. But, I wanted to rackmount my home theater equipment. I had used various Ikea shelves and had looked at expensive glass audio racks. My issue was, that these high end audio racks, maybe had 4-5 shelves. And I've got a lot of components, amps, preamps, etc. And the ikea shelves were a pain in the ass to pull out to clean up wiring, etc. in the back.
Enter the omnimount racks. First, these are good looking racks. The brushed metal handles/pulls are pretty sleek. There are optional side panels and the unit comes with a few blank panels with square perforations for airflow, the shelves have the same square holes, which are pretty well conceived. I had to buy more rack shelves, and I didn't always get rack shelves made by Omni (any 19" rack mount item will work). So, I've added a few black brushed aluminum drawers (for remote controls and patch cables) and some additional shelves (solid shelves, no perforations) for things like my Wii.
They want you to mount heavier items at the bottom. So, that's where I put my power conditioners and amps (I still mounted the receiver/pre-amp up top, as I don't like to bend down to control anything).
What I love is, I can wheel these puppies away from the wall and there are all sorts of great routing channels in the back to keep audio signals far away from electrical. So, I can really tidy up and bundle cables to minimize the normal nest. Want to upgrade cables, easy. Want to swap out a component, easy.
I can maximize airflow and keep my components running cool and I can get enough shelves to fully rack and secure my equipment. No danger of kids pulling something down. No concerns over earthquakes.
I used a lot of black zip ties and cable sleeves to keep things tidy and out of sight. There's a channel on each side, on the back, which enables you to run concealed cabling up and down (or even tie up a long power strip, if you want to minimize powercable runs).
In short, I love the ability to maximize my space, design a good airflow, and customize my rack layout so that each component has a spot, not resting precariously ontop of each other.
These can range in price, but shop around, and try to get free shipping. It's a big unit, it comes largely pre-assembled, you have to rearrange the shelves, but you don't have to worry about screwing it all together square.
These are robust, good looking, and easy to use. I highly recommend these for a living room or a sound studio.

Usually, I will be very careful to rate a product perfect. This product itself deserved 4 1/2 star in the category. However, since I got a good deal from this product, I will say it's 5. I will try to post picture here later.
Pro:
-solid shelves feel can handle more weight than advertised.
-5 U shelf attached to the rack front and BACK.
-Vented space design for air flow
-four solid wheels for easy maneuver
-handsome design to matched expensive gears; aluminum Omnimount badge and handle gives up scale feel
-retention bars to secure each gear on the individual shelf
-paid 440 shipped when local store advertised 999
-cable management feature on the back
-Great maximum weight at 1000 pounds
-Brake Screw on wheels to secure the unit from kids
Con:
-2 U shelves are only secured to the rack on the front, not the back
-Only the two rear wheels pivot; the two front wheels only do straight line
-Have to buy an addition 5 U shelf for additional amp but that's personal
-the handle bar can be more secured with the bolts it provided
-the unit itself is little bit too deep for my taste at 26 inches
-Required freight service and yes it arrived to your house in one big piece
I think the Pros way way out weighted the Cons that it didn't really matter to me.
