Great Audio QualityApr 07, 2009

As a sound engineer for our church, I have worked with true high-end wireless microphone systems, both Shure & Sennheiser. I have also gone cheap on more than one wireless set-up for my own use, only to be disappointed every time.....except with the Pyle PDW-M5500! Wow....I was really surprised by how good these mics sound.
The microphones themselves have good balance with just enough heft to damp out some of the handling noise. Additionally, they are coated with a soft-feel coating, which eliminates the scratchy, hissy sound you get with cheap plastic. Fit & finish of the mics is good, and the windscreens are nicely made, eliminating most (but not all) breath & pop sounds.
Fit & finish on the receiver isn't quite as high, and the extruded aluminum faceplate has an 80's retro look. There are numeric displays for each of the 4 channel volume settings, with LED indicators for RF carrier and audio level, again, for each channel, which modernizes the interface somewhat.
We live in the suburbs, and have not had any interference on any of the 4 VHF channels, though in a crowded city environment, this may not be the case. Frequencies are pre-selected at the factory and cannot be changed by the user. For those of you that think only UHF systems can sound good, do a little research. VHF is not dead.
The mics and receiver are matched and use companding circuitry to reduce noise and maintain dynamic range over the wireless connection. There also appears to be a noise gate, which when combined with the "soft" squelch, virtually eliminates hiss when the mic is turned off, as well as the sound of the switch on the microphone itself. Very sophisticated.
The tonal characteristics of the dynamic mic elements are well suited to vocals, both singing & speaking. There are no exaggerated frequencies, no harshness, and even with amateur vocalists, they are difficult to overload. The response pattern of the mics has very good rearward rejection, meaning they are not prone to feedback, unless of course they are pointed directly at a speaker.
My only criticism is the batteries rattled around a little, which you could hear clearly. I simply slid a wire pipecleaner into the battery compartments along the length of the batteries....problem solved. The batteries are common AAs (another plus compared to expensive 9 volt cells), and can be changed quickly if needed, which isn't the case with rechargeable microphones. The batteries also last a good long time.
OK....they're not Shure UR2 Betas....which sell for roughly $2000.00 per channel including the receiver. But to my relatively trained ear, the Pyles can be eq'd and set up to nearly match the Shures. And at roughly $35.00 a channel, these are an incredible deal.

Not bad for the price, but you get what you pay forJul 20, 2010
By Richard C Yeager I work as a Karaoke DJ. I recently purchased the PDWM5500 after my old Audio2000's AWR6547DU met an unfortunate end. I wanted something less expensive since I'm frequently dealing with intoxicated people.
Out-of-the-box impressions:
Pros - The receiver has dual antennas, independent gain controls for all 4 mics, and a balanced XLR mixed output. It comes with rack mounting hardware for those who need it. The mics use AA's instead of 9V, and don't feel too light (once the batteries are installed).
Cons - As others have mentioned, the battery covers come off rather easily. I typically have to wrap a piece of clear packing tape around the base to keep them on. The antennas on the receiver cannot be removed and have no means of being locked down when not in use. The buttons on the front of the receiver feel cheap and one of them was almost pushed inside the unit, though it still works.
After using this system at multiple bars in a major city for 1 1/2 weeks:
The sound quality is decent (though definitely not on the level of my old mics), though I have to turn up the mic gain on my mixer rather high to effectively pick up most of the singers. Harsh consonants are picked up a little too easily and require an adjustment on the part of the singer to compensate.
I have no issues with VHF interference, but I frequently encounter drop-outs when someone is moving around with the microphone. I wondered why this was happening in a dual-antenna system, so I more closely examined the receiver. These are **not** diversity antennas. One antenna is for mics A & B, and the other is for mics C & D. Even with unobstructed LoS to the receiver, and standing no more than 10 feet away, I still encounter drop-outs.
These mics are not particularly durable. It's only taken a little over a week for one of them to break. I had a customer drop a mic on the floor, and something broke internally - a few small fragments of plastic fell out when I removed the batteries and that mic no longer functions. My old Audio2000's were dropped, banged around, and generally abused for a year before I had any issues whatsoever.
You will definitely want rechargeable batteries. While a set will last ~12 hours, each mic uses 3x AA's. My old UHF mics only used 2 and functioned for just as long.
Final Verdict:
If you need a decent wireless system in an environment where the mics will be mostly stationary and will suffer little-to-no abuse, these are a great deal.
If you plan to use these in a high-stress environment where there is a moderate risk of mishandling or misuse, you might want to invest in something more durable.

Nice, but cheap.May 18, 2008
By M. Tharin This is a very good setup for the money. One of the mikes picks up a local radio station but with three others working flawlessly I have no worries. I can get a range of better than 100 feet, even through steel stud walls. I have had to wrap each mike with some rubber bands to keep the battery covers on but those batteries last a good long time.

GREAT PRODUCT BUT NOT PERFECT!!Jul 06, 2010
By AngelRipper01 I BOUGHT THIS FOR MY KARAOKE BUSINESS. I'VE ONLY DONE 4 GIGS WITH IT SO FAR. THE SOUNS QUALITY WAS SUPRISINGLY GREAT AND BETTER THAN MY PREVIOUS MICS (SURE SM 58) BUT YOU HAVE TO PUT THE MIC A SLIGHTLY CLOSER TO YOUR FACE. THERE'S A LITTLE MORE OF A POPPING SOUND ON WORDS THAT HAVE THE LETTER "P" IN IT BUT HALFWAY DECENT SINGERS START TO SOFTEN THE LETTER AFTER NOTICING THE DIFFERENCE. THE RANGE IS PERFECT EVEN WHILE WALKING OR RUNNING AND EVEN WITHOUT CONNECTING THE LITTLE ANTENAE IN THE BACK (THE FUTHEST I'VE TESTED WAS A LITTLE UNDER 100 FT THROUGH SEVERAL WALLS), BUT I STILL PUT IT ON. THE STANDBY MODE IS ANOYING AND NOT NEEDED. THE RED LIGHT SHOULD BE GREEN BECAUSE CUSTOMER THINK RED MEANS "STANDBY", "OFF" OR "DYING BATTERY".
THE BEST THING ABOUT THIS PRODUCT IS THAT THERE IS NO HUMMING OR BACKGROUND NOISE WHEN NOBODY'S SINGING AND THERE IS ALMOST NO FEEDBACK AT ALL. I NO LONGER WORRY THAT THE SINGER IS GOING TO WANDER TOO CLOSE TO THE SPEAKER. I WAS ABOUT TO BUY A $100 FEEDBACK ELIMINATOR BEFORE I GOT THESE MICS. MY SET DID NOT PICKUP ANY RADIO STATIONS OR OTHER BROADCAST OF ANY KIND. THE BASE UNIT IS RACK-MOUNTABLE AND LIGHT WEIGHT. WORKS FINE WOTHOUT THE ANTENAES EXTENDED. THERE ARE FOUR LEDS SHOWING YOU WHICH MIC IS WHICH. THE BOX THE SYSTEM COMES IN IS SMALL AND HAS A HANDLE - I USE IT TO CARRY THE MICS AFTER I STUFFED A PIECE OF BUBBLE WRAP IN THE SPACE WHERE THE BASE UNIT USED TO BE.
JUST LIKE THE OTHER REVIEWERS I PUT BLACK TAPE OVER THE BATTERY DOOR (THAT ALWAYS GETS LOST NO MATTER WHAT THE DEVICE IS) AND THREE OF THE MICS WORK PERFECT. ONE OF THEM LOST VOLUME (I KEEP IT TO MC & LET THE CUSTOMER USE THE OTHERS) BUT I CAN ADJUST THE RF (IT JUST A SCREW INSIDE THE MIC YOU TURN LEFT OR RIGHT) OR THE VOLUME ON THE OTHERS TO EVEN THEM OUT (THE MICS CAN ALL BE ON ONE CHANNEL OR FOUR SEPERATE CHANNELS) LATER. THEY ARE MADE IN CHINA SO THE PLASTIC IS A LITTLE FLIMSY BUT NOT MUCH AND THEY HAVE A COOL SOFT FINISH. I DON'T HEAR THE BATTERIES RATTLING AROUND. BATTERY LIFE IS ABOUT 16 HRS. I WOULD RECOMEND GETTING A RECHARGEABLE BATTERY SYSTEM - THE BATTERIES THE MICS CAME WITH LEAKED IN ONE MIC (THINK THIS MIGHT BE WHAT LESSEND THE VOLUME ON ONE MIC). EVEN IF ONLY 3 WORK (I DIDN'T EXPECT ALL 4 TO WORK BASED ON PREVIOUS CUSTOMER REVIEWS) - THE SYSTEM IS STILL A GREAT BUY FOR ME CONSIDERING I PAID $100 FOR EACH OF MY PREVIOUS MICS. I'M EVEN GONNA BUY A BACKUP SET!

Pyle PDWM5500 Wireless MicNov 24, 2009

Sound quality was good. Used it for a USO show and was happy with the sound. Battery life was as expected and OK. The microphones themselves were disappointing in their construction. On one the antenna screw mount stripped out. On another the battery door kept falling off until I taped it on. For my application this was OK but be aware on a demanding environment this may not be for you.
