5Panamax Surge Protector SP8-AVAug 05, 2010
By Steven M. Gray
I first started using Panamax Surge Protectors back in the early 90's when I was doing Satellite Dish installations in the mountains of North Carolina. We would not do an installation if the customer did not purchase a Panamax. The reason is that the mountains are notorious for lightning strikes. A 10 foot Satellite Dish is a big target and many were on 10-15 foot high poles.

Our company chose Panamax because they were the only company that guaranteed protection against lightning strikes and they offered up to a $50,000.00 replacement of all components that were connected. I saw many incredible lightning strikes that took out the dish, the receiver, the TV and anything else. We never had a problem with Panamax honoring their guarantee.

Today I have every piece of electronics protected by Panamax Surge Protectors. My latest purchase the SP8-AV I bought to protect my musical equipment. This includes my PA system, power amp and mixers. I have others to protect all outlets in my home studio. I have Panamax Surge Protectors protecting all of my computers, my home theater and my appliances the lone exception being my stove. The Panamax AV series cleans the signals from my cable lines and I truly noticed a difference with my HDTV. I use them to protect my network and my telephones.

If there is a better surge protector on the market I don't know of one. Panamax offers a wide variety of protectors from 2 outlet wall units to high-end EMF/RF line conditioners. You will pay much more for a Panamax than any other surge protector but you have the peace of mind knowing that if anything connected to a Panamax is damaged by a line surge, lightning or any other type of possible electrical problem that they stand behind their warranty. You spend your hard earned money on nice electronics why take the risk of loosing it all with a cheap surge protector? If there is another company that guarantees against lightning strikes I do not know of one. Thankfully Amazon is one of the few authorized online retailers that offer Panamax products. Do yourself a big favor and buy a Panamax today.

5No problems so farFeb 05, 2010

The SP8-AV surge suppressor has been doing great for me. I use it to protect my desktop in my office. So far, I have had no issues. I wouldn't settle for the big box store suppressors as they are way overpriced for what you get in protection. The build is solid and the layout of the outlets are ideal for big adapter plug ins. I will purchase more in the future for other computer setups.

3Panamax Brand 5 stars! Design of this protector (ulp) -2 starsDec 07, 2011
By brainout
I adore Panamax surge protectors. Have six of them, for going on 20 years now. They have saved my many computers time and again. The only brands I trust with my most valuable equipment, are Panamax; and very secondarily, certain types of Belkin. (Belkin has its own brand of 50K equipment-replacement warranties; and frankly its 8-outlet surge protector has functioned quite admirably, for over 15 years. But it's not as clamp-sensitive as Panamax.)

At least once a month, there is a surge or power outage of some kind; equipment not attached to the Panamax, fried or could have fried. So count me a fan.

The other Panamax protectors I have, all sport outlets on the TOP of the surge protector. They are usually well-spaced, so an adapter with its hunky size doesn't obscure the outlet(s) alongside. Apparently some geek at Panamax decided to remake the design, resulting in my -2 star rating for it, here. Same great protection, but hello -- why put the outlets on ONE SIDE of the protector? It doesn't save space. Presumably the thought was, 'hey, they can plug in the adapters vertically' -- along that SIDE. Okay, but then it's unbalanced, given the new shape. Since the sides are SLANTED (why?), you can't position the outlet sideways, it will keep tipping over. BAD IDEA. (Same thoughtlessness as that stupid pop-top in Gladware, so now you can't stack the food containers.)

Alternatively, maybe the Panamax shape-design geeks thought you were supposed to stand the protector upright and upside down, leaning against the wall, such that the on-off button would be inaccessible; so if accidently moved, the switch on top would turn the protector off, annoying the buyer; but between annoyances, at least you could save space since the SIDE OUTLETS take up added space.

Smarter design would have been, to put the coax and the tel line openings in the center, also on top; then put the other four outlets currently on the SIDE, instead where the coax and tel line openings are now: such that ALL OUTLETS ARE ON TOP. But no...

So I'm keeping this protector (which I just bought in Amazon, great price and service); at least I can still use the four top outlets easily. But am in the market for older Panamax protectors, even if used. Ones with all the outlets, on top. If you know of any, would you please tell me? Thank you!

5Great ProductMay 13, 2012
By John C. Parker, Jr.
I have had a Panamax since 1995. It worked great, but during a power surge due to an open neutral caused by the power company's line, it burned up. However, everything plugged into it was fine. This new replacement works as well. This is a great product and is recommended for anyone with expensive equipment to protect. I will only use Panamax surge protectors, since they have proven reliable to me and protected my extensive computer system.
