 Destroyed my La Crosse BC-900 battery charger!!!Sep 30, 2006

I bought this bulky heavy item from Amazon because of the positive reviews here. I used it during a trip to London. I would not mind the weight or bulk if it worked. On its first use it blew an internal fuse and I would later find out that it also destroyed my $50 battery charger. To make matters worse I could not even attempt to use the converter again since I did not have a replacement fuse. Steren supplied no extra fuses or even an instruction book. Nowhere on the box or the item does it tell you what fuse it uses so you have to magnify the tiny writing on the replaceable fuse to figure it out. Stay away from this junk item and head down to your local Radio Shack and buy a converter that has a resettable fuse.
As an update to this review I contacted Steren and they told me to throw the unit out since they claim that there are no user replaceable parts and that includes the removable fuse. Strewn offered to do nothing for me and referred me back to Amazon. Apparently Steren is as junk a company as their products are. They distain their customers and couldn't care less about how their products perform once they get your money.

Converter works fine but the hinge for the lid on the case is not made well, mine broke during the first trip and now it will not stay shut without assistance from a couple of rubber bands.
I do like the individual adapter plugs. They have blade and rounded female receptors so you can use them with US and European devices. Also, you can use them without the converter if your devices' power adapter is 110 - 240 variable.

We went to Europe for 2 weeks, there was rain for the first week of the trip. We pretty much stayed in the room watching our DVD player using the converter and plugged the player straight into the plug. Unlike other review i had NO PROBLEMS!! No smoke, no popping sounds, this product was on every day for at least 5-6 hours for the first week and the second week it was on 2-3 hours a day.. Still working! I had bought a similar product last year when we went to Europe and it exploded on the 3rd day.. I am VERY happy with the converter kit and it cost very little too!

My wife used this for a week in Paris to dry and curl her hair without problems. The high wattage setting doesn't quite get up to the 1800 or 1875 watts that some curlers and hair dryers pull, but it wasn't much of a problem. She did note that the curling iron didn't get as hot as it usually did, but I guess that's the point. Better safe than sorry. She's come home with melted curling irons on two occasions before this, so we were happier this time.
It's not the lightest converter in the world, but the box is fairly small overall, and much of the space is taken up by country-specific adapters, most of which you won't need unless you're traveling across continents. So, what you end up bringing on a trip is minimal: the converter itself and one adapter (if you need it; in Europe, with its recessed outlets, you will).
