5GREAT TRIPOD FOR THE MONEY!Jan 24, 2010
By Jason Purdie "JP_Seattle"
I recently got back into photography after a decade long hiatus. This time, it is a whole new world of DSLRs, auto focus, and lightweight lenses. One of the first purchases (after my Pentax K-x and kit lens) that I knew I must have was a tripod. Back when I shot with a 35mm SLR, I remember I had bought a tripod for no more than $40 back in the 90's and it served me well. It was nothing special but it was sturdy (which is what matters). The downside to it, as I remember, was it was so heavy (built like a tank!).

When I started looking at the weight of the new tripods on the market, I was thinking to myself, there is no way these are going to be sturdy with a 5lb camera+lens on top. I read dozens of reviews online which all basically said the same thing: "Don't waste your money on inexpensive tripods as they are garbage. Just save up your money for a Manfrotto or Slik brand tripod." I thought about that and looked at the brands they recommended. I guess the technology AND price of tripods has come a long way in 20 years.

What I decided, is to get a cheap tripod to get my by for awhile and if I decide that it is garbage, then I am not out too much money and I can get one of the $200+ tripods everyone recommends. I started looking at tripods under $50. There are dozens of brands that sell cheap tripods and most of them seem to be a carbon copy of the next one with no visible difference from the pictures. After looking at all of them, comparing prices, and reading reviews, I decided to go with the Digital Concepts TR-60N tripod for $15 with free shipping. It has 200+ positive reviews and a 4 star rating on Amazon. Can't be too bad right? WRONG! This thing was what everyone said cheap tripods would be - GARBAGE! It was flimsy, cheaply made, not tall enough, difficult to operate, the head and the quick release did not lock in all the way, and just lame. I immediately sold it and was back on the market for another tripod.

I was considering making the jump straight to the $200+ Manfrotto tripods at this point after my bad experience with the Digital Concepts TR-60N. That is when a friend recommended I take a look at Dolica Proline tripods. They offer carbon fiber and (cheaper) aluminum alloy tripods for reasonable prices and are pretty good quality. I looked at them and found one that looked like a much sturdier, better designed, and better built tripod than the TR-60N. The Dolica model I was looking at was the AX620B100 Proline tripod for under $75 (They also make the same one in carbon fiber for $135). The only problem was they were not in stock ANYWHERE! Every website I could find it at was back-ordered for 3-5 weeks. As impatient as I am, I kept looking for a solution.

I stumbled across the Sunpak 4300 Pro-B Tripod. It appeared to be virtually identical to the Dolica AX620B100 and the good news is it was only $47 with free shipping! I pulled the trigger and ordered it. It was here within a couple days thanks to my Amazon prime free trial membership which gave me free 2 day shipping on all orders for 30 days. I got the tripod out of the box, crossing my fingers, and hoping that it was not a repeat of the Digital Concepts tripod. I was relieved as I checked it out. This tripod is 100x better than the cheap ones. It has a far superior design. It is much sturdier. I am 190lbs and I can lean on it without it bending, bowing, or sliding on a concrete floor. It extends far taller than the cheap ones and is much sturdier at full height. The ballhead is a new concept for me and I was unsure of it at first, but now I love it. It is so much easier and faster to set up your camera where you want it. You just point your camera and lock it in. Simple! It comes with 2 quick-release plates so you can use 2 cameras or have a back-up. The quick-release and tripod both locks down much better than the cheaper tripod. Oh, you can even spread the tripod legs out for a super wide and stable stance or even turn the center column upside down to take pictures of or close to the ground. Overall, I cannot find anything I don't like about this tripod. I wish it would have came with a bag. The $15 tripod came with a bag and so does the Dolica, but that doesn't bother me too much as it will be mounted to my camera bag most of the time anyways.

I do see that within a couple days after I ordered this Sunpak 4300 Pro-B tripod the price went up from $47 to $81 so I guess I got a good deal on it. I bought it through Amazon through a 3rd party seller and from the looks of it the Dolica tripods are back in stock at all the websites that I could not find it at... and at a big discount. It is selling for $40-$50 now. So it looks like the Sunpak doubled in price and the Dolica dropped almost 50%. I would definitely recommend looking into these 2 tripods. They seem to be great!

I will post some pictures in the Customer images.

Whatever you do, DO NOT BUY THE DIGITAL CONCEPTS TR-60N or any of the other tripods that look similar to it for under $40. They are indeed, garbage.

26.6 LB load capacityMar 20, 2007
By H. Shi "H Shi"
Sunpak 4300 Pro is definitely light weight. The load capacity is only 6.6LB according to the box and user guide. Advertised 11 LB max load is either an error or a joke. Once getting all the section extended, you can feel how wobbly it can be.

4Good DealJun 12, 2009
By Mike
I am a novice and didn't want to spend a lot of money on a professional tripod. However, I wanted a tall tripod with a good weight rating and a ball head with quick release. I was concerned about spending too little, but this tripod appears to be a great deal. It is very stable and comes with two quick release plates. The ball head doesn't pivot smoothly with a digital SLR on it, but otherwise I feel like I got everything I wanted at a fair price.

5Nice BuyJan 31, 2010
By Joanne C
I bought a $28 Velbon Tripod from Walmart, what a nightmare, lol! I got a chance to take a look at a Manfrotto Tripod that my friend has & I went crazy. Of course, they are super expensive, so it took me like 2 weeks of reading reviews, forums, etc & I took a chance on this tripod because of the legs, the height, the Ballhead which doesn't restrict you from aiming you camera the way you want, doesn't have those bars connecting to the middle colum which doesn't let you completely open up, etc. It's not to heavy either, you really can do so much with this tripod. I love it & I love what I paid for it, not a Manfrotto, but has lots of potential. My teacher said it was a great buy, another classmate bought it too, & when you do, you'll love it.
