My friend has the 400 model, which they do not make any more. I bought the 420 thinking they must have improved it. They did not. The 420 feels more cheaply made, and it lacks the lens cap. Without the lens cap you can not put this in your pocket or any place where the detector window could be damaged. It is still a nice device, and works well, it is just not a gadget you can toss in your toolbox or pocket without risk of it being damaged.

The small infrared thermometer are an essential item in my kitchen. I have used one from several different manufacturers. The electronics (internals) appear to be identical; only the case changes with the manufacturer. The device is especially useful for frying, and cooking candy or caramel. It is also useful for heating water or warming dishes on the stovetop. Measuring temperature in seconds without getting anything dirty quickly becomes a habit. I have given several away as gifts.

I use this item daily at the factory I work at testing the temperature of vacuume pumps, water pumps and motors. To ensure they are not overheating. I also use it at home to test the temperature of computers and cpus of machines that I work on. Over all a great product to have for the electroniclly inclined.
