Tough Trucks is one of the best Monster Truck racing games I've played yet.
The game allows you to choose from 6 different models of stock pickups. They all look strangely familiar but with no brand names to be found. So if you bleed Ford blue, or your heart beats for Chevrolet, you can only guess that you're driving your favorite brand.
Once you've selected your pickup they take you to the shop where you can man it up by painting it and applying decals. My favorite is the picture of God. I nicknamed my truck "God's Rig". Finally you can enter the first race, where you will most likely get your butt handed to you. But even though you lost, you can learn something from the other racers.
Watch the way the first place truck takes corners. If you pay close attention you can learn how you need to corner in this game. Every corner you take in this game will be some degree of a power slide. So, here's how to power slide your way to victory:
1. First, you need to get yourself to slide. As you approach the turn you need to begin to tap your e-brake button.
2. As you enter the turn you need to use the directional keys to turn your truck into the turn.
3. Finally for most turns you can just hold down the gas the whole time and come out of it okay. Sometimes you'll need to let off and then get right back on it halfway through. You'll get a feel for it..
Because the game requires so much power sliding, the first thing you need to buy is a larger engine. Once you get the hang of power sliding the first race will become a piece of cake. Take your prize money and buy yourself an engine upgrade. This new engine will pull you right through the slide and onto victory.
Other than power sliding, there are four other keys to winning the game. The first is upgrading in order. You need to be careful to upgrade your truck in steps. If you put too big of tires on with too small of an engine, your truck won't have enough power to help you accelerate or pull you through a turn. Also, remember that when you upgrade, the damage you've accrued is automatically fixed. Make sure you always save enough money, (at least 800) to be able to fix damages.
The second is save points. Every time you win a race, save the game. They give you 4 different save spots so take advantage of them by using each one in sequence, so you can always go back.
The third is taking advantages of the gaps in the walls during the races. Not to cut through, but to ram your opponents into. At the beginning of the race, you'll always start in last. The trick is to sideswipe your opponents and then force them into a gap in the wall during a straightaway. This will slow them down enough so that you can take a comfortable position in the lead.
The final key is truck selection. Some trucks may have better acceleration right away, but they take on damage quickly. The more damage you have in a race, the less effective your truck is. So you may start the race with a quick truck, but after the first collision with a wall or another driver, you'll end the race with a brick.
Tough trucks is a great game for truck lovers everywhere. It has a lot of strategy behind it, and is just a blast to play. The only problem I have with it, is that it can be quite short. If you really played it hard, you'd have it beaten in a day.
